Gadgets Join the Search for the Lost Tomb of Genghis Khan

Satellite imagery will play a key role in the search for the tomb. GeoEye, a company that offers geospatial data from high-resolution cameras on board its orbiting satellites, will work with the researchers. Based on their instructions, GeoEye will point its Ikonos satellite at regions where Khan’s grave is likely to be. The resultant imagery will be downloaded from Ikonos via a microwave downlink and processed at GeoEye's office in Denver.

GeoEye Imagery Explorer and Terrain Profiler by ESRI

The GeoEye Imagery Explorer and Terrain Profiler prototype applications by ESRI incorporate GeoEye Imagery into functionality.

These two prototype satellite image catalogs are built on the ArcGIS API and displays high-res images of locales all over the globe, geotagged for on-the-map finger searches and fully manipulable via multi-touch. The Terrain Profile app does just what it sounds like: drag your finger between or around locations, and get topographical information on that specific route or area hosted by ArcGIS.

A GeoEye customer recognized the boat ARA Fragata Libertad in a recent posting of GeoEye-1 imagery in the GeoEye Image Gallery. ARA means Armada de la Republica Argentina and the boat serves as a school ship in the Argentine Navy.

The half-meter ground resolution color image of Boston Harbor, Massachusetts was collected by the GeoEye-1 satellite on July 11, 2009. The tall ships seen in the image, tied up to the pier, are participants of the Sail Boston 2009, an official port of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge Event, which took place July 8 - 13, 2009.

GeoEye Uses the Cloud to Serve up its Inauguration Imagery

Now, a cloud story. GeoEye had planned to share an image of President Obama's inauguration from GeoEye-1 back in January. Once the image and its availability was shared on CNN, demand through the GeoEye pipe to the Internet grew, threatening to block it (think of a plugged up pipe!). Many, many people wanted to download that 3Mb image. But GeoEye was ready. A quick phone call and a credit card moved the image to Amazon's S3 (storage services), and a quick change to the website pointed requesters to the new URL. Catastrophe was averted by the cloud! Now, all of GeoEye's sample images live up on Amazon. In time, some processing might be up there,
too, says Deke Young...

GeoEye Uses Best of Breed Tech and the Cloud to Better Serve up its Imagery (GeoFUSE)

I got a real "two-fer" when I spent some time with Deke Young, the Director of Business Systems at GeoEye. I got the inside scoop on the back end of its new GeoFuse applications and I learned more about the cloud and its use.

First, GeoFuse. It's the next generation of GeoEye's old ImageSearch, the tool used to find, evaluate and then purchase imagery. That first generation app was built by Canadian company Compusult. With the imagery from GeoEye-1 coming online, last year Young and his team decided it was time to be sure the app truly made the company's products "timely, accurate and accessible." To do that it looked to key technology providers for the backend: Microsoft for data storage in SQLServer, ESRI for GIS functionality via ArcGIS Server and Google for its familiar interfaces. Put those together and you have GeoFuse...

Introducing the Valley of the Khans Project assisted by the GeoEye Foundation!

In the spring of 2008, University of California San Diego (UCSD) research associate Albert Yu-Min Lin initiated a research project using a newly formulated, non-invasive scientific approach to search for the tomb of the legendary Mongolian leader Genghis Khan. Dr. Lin’s extensive training in non-invasive materials imaging, along with his expertise in Mongolian customs and history, and his political position, qualify him as the ideal principal investigator of this monumental three-year project which is currently underway in the "Forbidden Zone" of Northeastern Mongolia. The GeoEye Foundation awarded Dr. Lin’s team a grant of archival, high-resolution IKONOS satellite data which Dr. Lin’s team will use for defining the landscape and creating a baseline of information.

Introducing the GeoEye-1 Launch Website!

Thank you for your interest in GeoEye and the launch of GeoEye-1, GeoEye's next-generation, sub half-meter Earth-imaging satellite. We hope this Web site serves as a valuable tool for you to learn more about the satellite's unprecedented image quality, advanced technology, superior partners and related news updates as they unfold.

GeoEye-1 has the highest resolution of any commercial imaging system and can collect images with a ground resolution of 0.41-meters or 16 inches in the panchromatic or black and white mode. It collects multispectral or color imagery at 1.65-meter resolution or about 64 inches, a factor of two better than existing commercial satellites with four-band multispectral imaging capabilities. While the satellite collects imagery at 0.41-meters, GeoEye's operating license from the U.S. Government requires re-sampling the imagery to 0.5-meter for all customers not explicitly granted a waiver by the U.S. Government.

Besides unsurpassed spatial resolution of 0.41-meters or about 16 inches, GeoEye-1 offers three-meter geolocation accuracy, which means that customers can map natural and man-made features to within three meters (about 9 feet) of their actual location on the surface of the Earth without ground control points. This degree of inherent accuracy has never been achieved in any commercial imaging system and will remain unchallenged even when next-generation commercial systems are launched in the coming years.
