GeoEye, Wikipedia and Satellite Imagery

GeoEye's GeoEye-1 satellite was launched September 6, 2008. The GeoEye-1 satellite has the highest resolution of any commercial imaging system and is able to collect images with a ground resolution of 0.41 meters (16 inches) in the panchromatic or black and white mode. It collects multispectral or color imagery at 1.65-meter resolution or about 64 inches, a factor of two better than existing commercial satellites with four-band multistage imaging capabilities. While the satellite is able to collect imagery at 0.41 meters, GeoEye's operating license from the U.S. Government requires re-sampling the imagery to 0.5 meters for all customers not explicitly granted a waiver by the U.S. Government.

3 Days, 3 Googlers, 2 CPUs, 8 Cores: Google goes to Camp Roberts

Look, up in the sky... GeoEye and Google

Circling the Earth are a trio of satellites owned by GeoEye, a company that supplies a good chunk of the overhead images seen on services such as Google Earth and Google Maps.

Those satellites provide a steady stream of images to the Virginia-based firm, which sells them to commercial and government clients. One of the company's satellites, for example, captured the images of President Barack Obama's inauguration for CNN within a few hours of the event, prompting the network to suggest it was history in the making, with the "fastest nonmilitary turnaround of a satellite image."

GeoEye Opens Its Doors To DC Students

On a field trip last week a group of Washington, DC, students got a rare inside look into the workings of one of Loudoun's most recognized businesses, as well as a glimpse of what might be possible in the future.

The students have spent the summer working in DC's Geographic Information System department, and Aug. 14 took one of their last educational trips to GeoEye, a leading producer of satellite, aerial and geospatial information and operator of Earth imaging satellites, the latest of which was launched less than a year ago.

"This is a very rare thing for us. They're getting to see things that most people don't get to see," Mark E. Brender, vice president of corporate communications and marketing for GeoEye said of the students' visit. "They've been doing field trips to places throughout the summer, and we wanted to host them here."

The quiz placed international images taken by the GeoEye next to trivia questions like "Tangerines were named for this city, the first one to ship the fruit to Europe" and "The nickname 'City of Lights' just gives this one away." The blog post listing the answers to the quiz also lists the geographic areas that were updated with the latest data push...
