Jane's satellite imagery analysis from March to May 2009 shows a pattern of tanks making their way north from the port of Mombasa. Satellite imagery captured at the same time in South Sudan showed ongoing construction at an SPLA compound several kilometres northeast of Juba (image A). That GeoEye-1 satellite image revealed tracked vehicles staged throughout the military facility and concealed under camouflage. In early May 2009, Jane's received photographic evidence of the SPLA facility at Juba, revealing the presence of nine new tracked vehicles in the compound's staging area.

PARIS — Earth observation services provider GeoEye Inc. said Nov. 10 revenue will increase by 12 percent to 16 percent in 2010 after even larger expected 2009 gains the company attributed to the introduction of its GeoEye-1 high-resolution optical imaging satellite. Dulles, Va.-based GeoEye said the U.S. government's appetite for satellite imagery is so large that the company sees no real threat to its revenue base when its competitor, DigitalGlobe, brings its WorldView-2 satellite into operation early in 2010.

U.S. 'Decades Behind' on Space Debris Threat, Official Says

The amount of junk floating in space is getting out of hand and the United States must step up its effort to control orbital trash, experts are saying...Indeed, many satellite operators are noticing the problem. The commercial imaging satellite company GeoEye has had to maneuver some of its spacecraft several times to avoid colliding with space junk, according to SPACE.com partner Space News. The company was forced to move its 10-year-old Ikonos satellite seven times to evade debris.

Google Street View Makes U.S. Government Uneasy - GeoEye Featured in Google Article

Virtual mapping programs have garnered some criticism from those who believe they might be adequate tools for terrorists staking out U.S. landmarks, but there is little the government can do to prevent publication of these images, according to the federal agency that handles satellite photography...Much of the satellite imagery used by such programs comes from international companies over which U.S. agencies have no jurisdiction, he said. The largest U.S.-based satellite imagery companies are Colorado-based Digital Globe and Virginia-based GeoEye. "The rest are all foreign," he said. NGA is instead focused on supporting commercial remote-sensing satellite companies through the purchase of imagery, Burpee said. "Over the last five years, we've got $1.5 billion invested in acquiring imagery and helping [GeoEye and Digital Globe] launch the next generation of commercial satellites."

GeoEye Dodging Space Junk With Increasing Frequency

Commercial imaging satellite operator GeoEye has had to move its spacecraft several times to avoid orbital debris, according to William Schuster, the company’s chief operating officer, who said the problem is only growing worse.


Speaking Nov. 3 at the Strategic Space Symposium here, Schuster said GeoEye has had to maneuver its 10-year-old Ikonos satellite seven times to avoid space junk. The company has had to take evasive actions four times with its GeoEye-1 satellite, which has been on orbit just over a year.
