53 Years Looking Down - GeoEye (Elevating Insight) Featured in Euroscience Article

Fifty three years ago, on 31 January 1958, the first satellite for the observation of Earth was launched. Explorer 1 was the first satellite sent into orbit by the United States of America. In October 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 into space thus beginning the Cold War space race.


Today, more than 2,000 satellites are circling the Earth. Some are communication satellites only, but most satellites are built to observe the Earth. Optical systems on satellites like GeoEye or RapidEye (both private) allow optical resolutions of up to 50 centimetres, providing spectacular views of the Earth surface...

GeoEye's Satellite Imagery Provides Insight for Photographic Expedition to Preserve Alacranes Reef - Case Study Featured on GeoEye Site

Working with the International League of Conservation Photographers, Ben Horton utilized GeoEye imagery to photograph the threatened ecosystem of the Alacranes reef in the Gulf of Mexico as part of the league's Rapid Assessment Visual Expedition (RAVE) project. The largest reef system in the Gulf of Mexico, the Alacranes reef is threatened by overfishing and illegal conch gathering. In addition, the coral is dying from the toxins released into the water from the boats...

Since the launch of the GeoEye-1 satellite in 2008, Google has added gigabytes of high-resolution GeoEye-1 and IKONOS imagery to Google Earth and Google Maps, such as a historic scene from the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, views of the pyramids in Egypt, and images showing urban expansion in China. To highlight other broadly-interesting GeoEye-1 images, Google has a 'GeoEye Featured Imagery' layer in Google Earth. Included within this layer are Featured Imagery placemarks, including a thumbnail of the image, a link to view the image in full-resolution, and a wealth of information about the scene, including resolution, collection date, and a narrative about the location...

Marine Museum Celebrates Geography - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in Article

TRIANGLE, Va. - More than 250 students from Prince William and Stafford Counties had a hands-on geography lesson Thursday during the National Museum of the Marine Corps' Geography Awareness Celebration...Among the organizations who participated in the event were GeoEye, the University of Mary Washington, George Mason University, Virginia Geographic Alliance, Library of Virginia, National Geographic Society, National Council for Geographic Education, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Geological Survey, Herff Jones/Nystrom and Prince William County Public Schools.


Uyen Dinh, GeoEye's senior director for government affairs, said her company's chief executive officer Matt O'Connell is a big supporter of science and technology education for kids. Events such as this one can help influence the youngsters to pursue a career in either of those fields, she said.

Haiti Earthquake: One Year On - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in BBC Article

A 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on 12 January 2010, killing more than 200,000 people and affecting almost four million.


Almost one year on, seen from above in this satellite image, Port-au-Prince, the capital, looks unaffected. But take a closer look and you will see clusters of blue and white spread across the city. These are the temporary camps where hundreds of thousands of Haitians have been forced to live after much of the city was destroyed.


The UN Development Programme says that a total of 188,383 buildings collapsed in the quake of which 105,000 were completely destroyed.

Haiti Earthquake: How Google Helped Save Lives - GeoEye Production Services Featured in Article

If a picture tells a thousand words, there are few images that explain the impact of the Haitian earthquake disaster better than the satellite view of the Petionville golf course.


Within days of the disaster, Haiti's only golf course – and a rare pocket of wealth in the poorest country in the Western hemisphere – had been filled with makeshift tents that became home to an estimated 55,000 people. The transformation of Petionville was documented thoroughly on Google Maps, which uses satellite imagery provided by GeoEye.


The day after the disaster, planes captured the state of the course – which already showed people starting to set up makeshift homes on the camp. GeoEye sent multiple flights out in the weeks after the disaster; all these layers can be viewed on Google Earth's "time" layer, which scrolls back from today to before the earthquake...

The foundation of the GeoEye imagery product line, the Geo, is a radiometrically corrected map oriented image suitable for a wide range of uses. In addition to being suitable for visualization and monitoring applications, the Geo is shipped with the sensor camera model in rational polynomial coefficient (RPC) format. This camera model maps the respective ground coordinates to image product coordinates. Block adjustment, ortho-rectification, and other photogrammetric processing can be performed with the RPC camera model. This product, coupled with a digital elevation model (DEM), permits skilled users to make their own orthorectified products using standard commercial software and available data sets. Why Use GeoEye-1 - GeoEye Imagery Collection Featured on Spatial Intelligence Blog

...Another advantage of GeoEye-1 comes from the orbit performance. With an orbit velocity of 7.5 km/sec, orbiting at an altitude of 681 kilometers, it has a repeat frequency of approximately three days. This means it is ideal for many types of change detection analysis. For example, monitoring extreme flood conditions such as those currently being experienced in Queensland, Australia, is just one potential benefit of this satellite's revisit frequency. Imagery from this ultra-high resolution satellite can be acquired at regular intervals to help rescuers identify escape routes, assess areas of highest damage and monitor the changing flood conditions. This is exactly what was done during the Haitian earthquake disaster which took place last year. GeoEye-1 imagery was used to assess areas that suffered the most damage in order to more effectively target the rescue efforts...
