Sheikh's Name Written in Sand Visible from Space - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured on Space.com

Hamad bin Hamdan al Nahyan, a billionaire Sheikh and member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family, has had his name carved into the sandy surface of an island he owns in the Persian Gulf. It is no lackadaisical sand-scrawling, though: At half a mile tall and 2 miles long altogether, the letters HAMAD are visible from space.

Satellites captured these images of al Futaisi Island, stamped with the name of its owner, back in 2009. They can be accessed on Google Maps and Google Earth.

Signature Sports Venues as Seen From Space - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured on WIRED

Mammoth sports stadiums and venues are always a sight to behold when you're sitting in them, but what if you're looking at them from space? That's a whole new perspective that we rarely see, but our friends at NASA and GeoEye have eyes in the sky that allow for us to gain a new appreciation for these architectural and natural landscapes that are more just hulking steel structures or sand traps by the sea.

Indeed, looking at these monuments of sport from above makes you think differently when you're visiting down below. Here are 12 notable venues that stretch across all periods of history to show us that times may change but our societal love of sports is endless.

Geospatial Data Providers Segment Data Products and Continue to Innovate Beyond Just Raw Data #esriuc

The big four data providers, including GeoEye, are no longer playing second fiddle to geospatial software solutions vendors. They are innovating in ways that go beyond simply selling raw satellite imagery or raw street centerlines. From points of interest to live traffic to LiDAR to SAR, airborne sensors to building models, you name it, these companies are rushing headlong into selling all kinds of geospatial data and packaging derivative products in ways that are truly market-driven. All of these companies offered something unique but you have to spend time with each to dig into their special sauce...

GeoEye's play in offering solutions has taken a different tack than that of DG. The company released information for the Esri UC that provided information about Esri Enterprise License Agreements for small municipal and county governments, public safety agencies and utilities that enable them to put an ArcGIS® system in place. Within that agreement is the GeoEye Image Pack which has a three-year term license and delivers the sub-meter, high-resolution imagery products. GeoEye stated in a press release that "new collection and event options are also available if no archive data exists or if a customer is responding to a crisis or planning for a major event." The solution pack includes GeoEye-1, IKONOS, and aerial imagery from MJ Harden, a GeoEye company. The objective is to target local governments under tight budget constraints.

Quick Action Helps Google Win Friends in Japan - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in NY Times Article

Kesennuma, Japan — An oddly equipped car made its way last week through the rubble in this tsunami-stricken port city. On the roof: an assembly of nine cameras creating 360-degree panoramic digital images of the disaster zone to archive damage.

It is one of the newest ways that Google, a Web giant worldwide but long a mere runner-up in Japan's online market, has harnessed its technology to raise its brand and social networking identity in this country.

Aerial images taken of Yuriage and Yagawahama before and after the earthquake and tsunami. Both are in Miyagi Prefecture. Google, GeoEye.

Google Earth, Street View As Historical Record in Japan - GeoEye Imagery Collection Featured in Article

A couple of months back we summed up the many ways that Google services were being used to help Japan after the March 11 earthquake. Today we learned about two more worthwhile projects in Japan, both involving Google's mapping technologies as historical record...

As you know, Japan is currently in the middle of rebuilding after on of the worst disasters to strike the country since 1945 bombing. New York Times reporter Hiroko Tabuchi just published a great piece explaining how Google is sending out it's Street View car to record digital images of areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Google Street View has been criticized in Japan in the past, primarily due to privacy concerns, but it appears that the company's efforts are welcomed in areas like Kesennuma.

Back in March The New York Times was quick to publish before-and-after satellite imagery (from GeoEye/EyeQ) of disaster-stricken areas. It's good to know that Google's Street View imagery will be available for news organizations and other interested parties to build upon in a similar manner as well...

GeoEye 2011 Calendar Images. In Siena, all roads lead to Piazza del Campo. It is one of Italy's most famous piazzas, mostly because of Il Palio, a bareback horse race that dates back to the Middle Ages and still takes place on the outer section of the square twice a year. The piazza was paved in 1349 in fishbone-patterned red brick, which divides into nine sections to commemorate the successful government dei Nove (Nine).
