GeoEye - This half-meter resolution satellite image shows the Atlantis Paradise Island resort and waterpark on Paradise Island in the Bahamas, located southeast of the United States in the Atlantic Ocean. The image was collected by the GeoEye-1 satellite on July 11, 2009 while flying 423 miles above the Earth at an average speed of 17,000 mph.

Most Inmates in Deadly Honduras Prison Fire Were Not Convicted: Government Report

Comayagua, Honduras - The prisoners whose scorched bodies were carried out piece by piece Thursday morning from a charred Honduran prison had been locked inside an overcrowded penitentiary where most inmates had never been charged, let alone convicted, according to an internal Honduran government report obtained by The Associated Press.

More than half of the 856 inmates of the Comayagua farm prison north of the Central American country's capital were either awaiting trial or being held as suspected gang members, according to a report sent by the Honduran government this month to the United Nations....

Take this NOAA Survey and Explain Why Increasing the Resolution of Commercial Satellite Imagery is Important

The study is a Congressionally Directed Action and conducted by NOAA to determine what the commercial market place wants/needs in terms of geospatial imagery resolution in order to be able to maintain its leadership position in geospatial technologies and solutions globally.

Global Marketing Insights, Inc. (GMI) is collecting information for NOAA focused on restrictions on the resolution of electro-optical (EO) imagery collected from US satellites that commercial companies may sell and the ways in which this will impact the Aerial, Commercial, Fed Civil Government and Academic sectors.

Proposed changes under consideration include changing the resolution restriction on commercial sales of satellite imagery from 0.5 meters ground sample distance (GSD) to .25meters GSD.

We invite you to take the survey and make your resolution requirements heard. NOAA's deliverable will go to congress April 15th, 2012 but the end user feedback on this survey ends this Friday.

GeoEye Satellite Clears Design Phase

GeoEye Inc. completed the last stage of design reviews for a National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency satellite program, GeoEye announced Thursday.

NGA approved the review for the agency's EnhancedView program Jan. 26.

GeoEye said the GeoEye-2 satellite will be fully operational by 2013.

Carl Alleyne, GeoEye's vice president of engineering, said NGA's approval means the company's system meets federal requirements and moves the firm-fixed-price program closer to completion.

The satellite will include an ITT Exelis-produced camera with 34-centimeter resolution imagery, used for tasking and image collecting.

Maps, Meth and the Lord's Resistance Army - GeoEye Featured in Google Policy by the Numbers Article

Maps have evolved in some pretty amazing ways, from the night sky maps carved onto cave walls in Lascaux, to modern day collaborative maps built by millions of citizen cartographers around the world. Using maps, we can look at how the world around us has changed. We can also use maps to govern more effectively, save lives or just find the cheapest beer.

But what makes maps really exciting isn't what they can tell us about our past or present, but what they could potentially tell us about our future, both good and bad.

A recent Fast Company piece entitled, "Google Maps Help Predict Meth Labs Before They Open" touches on this idea. In his 2009 book, Geography and the Drug Addiction, Dr. Max Lu took three years of data around meth lab seizures and used it to show the likely spread of those meth labs in the future.

Thousands of miles away, predictive analysis was being used by GeoEye to map political conflict and refugees in central Africa. Using the AnthroMapper and Signature Analyst tools, GeoEye's analysts were able to identify the pattern of both the Lord's Resistance Army and related refugee populations.

They then used statistical models to represent the geospatial "signature" of this activity and identified regions where new conflict was more likely to occur in the future. Combining this model with population density statistics helped NGOs, local governments and the military focus their resources...

Satellites for Climate Checks Get Boost After Durban Talks

Feb. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Brazilian deforestation and melting polar ice caps are feeding a boom in demand in the $2.1 billion market for satellite data, images and services used to monitor the planet...

Illegal Logging - Satellites also serve to step up surveillance of illegal logging, said Mark Brender, executive director of the GeoEye Foundation, a non-profit organization set up by GeoEye Inc.

"Satellites are like a silent watchman in space looking down on Earth," Brender said, citing a project to unveil rosewood trafficking and illegally sourced timber in Madagascar.

One developing country that's tapping satellite intelligence is the African republic of Gabon. President Ali-Ben Bongo Ondimba in 2010 set up AGEOS, a national space observation agency that will also monitor the environment in 20 neighboring nations, including Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"The knowledge of our environment is thanks mainly to satellites," the project's chief, Aboubakar Mambimba, said in a phone interview from Gabon's capital, Libreville. "It gives us knowledge on the state of our forests, our water resources and helps us implement effective policies to preserve the environment."

Satellite images so sharp that a baseball home plate is recognizable from more than 400 miles hang in the federal budget balance — and with them the fortunes of two companies with Colorado operations.

High-resolution Earth images snapped by a squadron of high-flying commercial satellites find uses in oil and gas exploration, mining, agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster response, national security and defense.

But the images and accompanying maps, analyses and other products are particularly critical to the military and intelligence communities.

Proposed steep cuts in the U.S. Department of Defense budget could affect satellite-imagery providers DigitalGlobe, headquartered in Longmont, and GeoEye, based in Virginia with a processing and operations center in Thornton. Combined, the companies have about 1,200 employees...

A GeoEye satellite caught the old Mile High Stadium and new Mile High on May 9, 2004, during the stages of destruction of one and the construction stage.

ScanEx Research and Development Center...OrbView Freebies - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery

Very high resolution satellite images, acquired by OrbView-3 satellite during the 2003-2007 timeframe have been posted in free access. This was announced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) on January 9, 2012. More than 180,000 scenes with the resolution of 1m (pan) and 4m (multispectral) of various Earth areas are now accessible via the EarthExplorer web-interface. Matthew Larsen from USGS noted that these data are an essential supplement to the USGS archive and are of high value for the scientific community.

OrbView-3 images have been distributed under the Public Domain license, meaning the data can be freely copied, distributed or used to create derived products. OrbView-3 data are not ortho-rectified, which is performed only for separate scenes "on-demand".

The OrbView-3 satellite was launched into sun-synchronous orbit on June 26, 2003. The vehicle was taken out of service on March 4, 2007. The OrbView High Resolution Imaging System camera was installed on the satellite, which helped to obtain multiple panchromatic 1m resolution and multispectral 4m resolution images. Swath width was 8km. The satellite operator was OrbImage company, now known as GeoEye after merging with Space Imaging in February of 2006.

The Budget Threat and What Could be Lost

Almost two years ago, I wrote an article here extolling the progressive virtues of the Department of Defense (DOD) and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in creating EnhancedView – a decade-long program to provide additional commercial satellite imaging capacity, upgraded ground architecture and value-added products and services to meet NGA and warfighter mapping and geospatial intelligence needs. Apparently, my enthusiasm got the best of me. The ink was barely dry on the contracts with GeoEye and DigitalGlobe before some in the Executive and Legislative Branches began to question the need for the program. The worsening fiscal situation has also brought EnhancedView – now NGA's largest program of record – increasing budget scrutiny.

The Administration has sent conflicting messages – President Obama has directed that over $400 billion over 10 years be eliminated from the Pentagon budget in the next decade. At the same time, the President endorsed the now so-called '2+2' future satellite imaging architecture in which two commercial-class satellites and two more sophisticated classified satellites would be built to meet future imaging requirements of the DOD, Intelligence Community, Department of Homeland Security and other government organizations.

Existing commercial imagery policy as well as the President's National Space Policy, and corresponding Department of Defense National Security Space Strategy, resoundingly endorse greater and sustained adoption of commercial technologies and partnerships to meet the needs of the U.S. government (USG). While no DOD program should be immune from budget tightening deliberations, EnhancedView remains exactly the creative public-private partnership model DOD needs in these challenging budgetary times...

OrbView-3 Satellite Data Available for Free - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured on Spatial Source

OrbView-3 satellite images collected around the world between 2003 and 2007 by Orbital Imaging Corporation (now GeoEye) at up to one-metre resolution can now be downloaded at no cost through USGS EarthExplorer.

"This is a significant addition to the USGS archive and a valuable resource for the global science community," said Matthew Larsen, Associate Director, Climate and Land Use Change. "Free access through the USGS archive amplifies the utility of the data, making it feasible for many researchers to study large areas at this level of accuracy."

"Partnering with GeoEye brings forward an important commercial resource in response to the need for authoritative, information-rich data about the land surface of the planet," said Bruce Quirk, USGS Land Remote Sensing Program manager.

The OrbView-3 dataset includes 180,000 scenes of one meter resolution panchromatic, black and white, and four meter resolution multi-spectral (colour and infrared) data, providing high resolution data useful for a wide range of science applications...

Solar Panels UK has just launched the Solar Panels Suitability Checker on its highly successful http://www.solarpanelsuk.co.uk website. The Suitability Checker is an interactive tool designed to help homeowners evaluate potential solar panel sites on an individual basis.

The Feed in Tariff provides a strong incentive to purchase and install PV panel micro-generators. To minimize ROI periods, solar panels should be positioned to collect the maximum amount of available sunlight. Sunflowers Inspire Improved Solar Power Plant - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured on MSNBC

The well-tuned geometry of the florets on the face of the sunflower head has inspired an improved layout for mirrors used to concentrate sunlight and generate electricity, according to new research.

The sunflower-inspired layout could reduce the footprint of concentrating solar power (CSP) plants by about 20 percent, which could be a boon for a technology that's limited, in part, by its massive land requirements.

CSP plants employ arrays of giant mirrors, each the size of half a tennis court, to beam the sun's rays up to heat a tube of fluid in the top of a tower. This hot fluid drives steam turbines that generate electricity.

In the traditional layout, the mirrors are arranged in rows of circles that ripple out from the central tower. Some, such as the Spain's Gemsolar power-generating array, take up 185 acres. That plant, when complete in 2013, will provide power for about 25,000 homes...

EnhancedView: Why the Entire Geospatial Industry Should Care

There is a dispute taking place in Washington that will have a significant impact on the availability of high quality geospatial data for commercial purposes. The EnhancedView program – which would give government agencies access to commercial high resolution satellite imagery and would also provide production and services to support the defense and intelligence communities – is under attack due to current budget constraints. While this battle is often portrayed as solely an issue for DigitalGlobe and GeoEye, the two U.S.-based commercial satellite imagery companies, the outcome will impact numerous existing and planned geospatial products and services that rely on high quality satellite imagery. As a result, this is a battle that should concern the broader geospatial community, much like the ongoing GPS-LightSquared dispute.

EnhancedView is a public-private partnership between the National Geospatial- Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the commercial satellite imagery providers. It was created in Fiscal Year 2010 and was intended as a 10-year program to serve as a complement to national overhead capabilities. GeoEye and DigitalGlobe collectively committed over a billion dollars of private capital to make the investments necessary to fulfill their respective obligations under the program. Such investments, including increased hiring for well-paying, highly skilled geospatial positions and significant purchases of hardware and software from vendors throughout the geospatial community, would continue over the term of the program. However, the companies are now being told that the EnhancedView program may be subject to budget cuts. These potential cuts not only jeopardize the economic viability of the EnhancedView program from a commercial standpoint, but also threaten geospatial positions and vendors throughout the geospatial ecosystem. Given the current economic prognosis, if the program is cut it is unlikely to regain its original form...

GeoEye to Map Russia - GeoEye Featured in Washington Business Journal

Russia, the world's largest country by land mass, has hired Herndon-based GeoEye Inc. to help map and catalog the country's more than 49 million land parcels.

GeoEye is working with its Russian partner, ScanEx Research and Development Center, on the multi-year project. GeoEye did not disclose the value of the work, other than calling it a multimillion dollar contract.

Under terms of the contract, the Russian Federal Service for State Registration, Cadastre and Cartography will acquire archive imagery GeoEye has already collected of Russia. GeoEye (NASDAQ: GEOY) will also collect new imagery of Russia beginning this year.

Maps will include multiple layers of information on each land parcel, including ownership, permits, licenses, rights, restrictions, transactions and taxation. The Russian government will make the data available to both government agencies and the public.

Russia spans nine time zones and covers more than 6.6 million square miles, or about one-ninth of the Earth's land mass.

GeoEye to Produce High-Resolution Images With Russian Partner; Christopher Tully Comments

GeoEye Inc. will work with a Russian partner to produce high-resolution satellite imagery for the Russian government under a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract, according to a GeoEye announcement.

GeoEye said the images will help create a base map of topographical features and property information such as type of ownership, licenses and taxes.

During the contract's first phase, GeoEye will deliver archive imagery to ScanEx Research Development Center. During the second phase, GeoEye will collect new imagery of Russia from the company's GeoEye-1 satellite.

The Russian government will post the completed map on the Web for public viewing and on a portal for viewing by federal and local agencies.

"GeoEye and ScanEx are working together to give Russia easy access to our timely geospatial information and help their government maintain consistent data layers for land parcels, infrastructure, borders and districts," said Christopher Tully, GeoEye's senior vice president of sales. "This project is yet another example of a groundbreaking product designed to advance the Russian Earth-observation market, and we are honored to be a part of it."

Will future archaeologists assume this circular structure was some sort of 21st-century Stonehenge? They wouldn't be completely wrong if they did: This is Spain's Gemasolar power-generating array, as seen in a satellite image from the GeoEye commercial Earth-imaging venture.

Like Stonehenge, the array is laid out geometrically to track the position of the sun. But Gemasolar isn't meant to mark the year's astronomical milestones. Instead, it will concentrate sunlight to provide power for 25,000 homes around the city of Seville...

A picture taken by the GeoEye-1 satellte on Nov. 4, 2010, shows the Gemasolar power-generating array in Seville, Spain. At the center of the array is a 40-story-high concrete tower, ringed by 2,650 mirrors. The mirrors focus sunlight on the tower, which stores the heat and converts it to energy.

The solar array in Seville, Spain looks a bit like a giant human eye from space. On closer examination, the center of the eye features a concrete solar tower that stands forty stories high. It is ringed by 2,650 mirrors that blast scorching rays of sunlight to the tower, which stores the heat and converts it to energy. We're presenting the scene as two separate pictures, showing the north and south side of Olympic Park. In each picture, the view on the left was captured by the GeoEye-1 satellite on Sept. 21, 2009, from a height of 425 miles (684 kilometers). Holiday Calendar: Mystery in the Gobi Desert - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured on MSNBC Photoblog

What are those strange white patterns in China's Gobi Desert? For weeks, experts have puzzled over the crazy lines that show up in satellite images.

Some of the theories have taken wild turns: Maybe they're messages directed at Earth-observing extraterrestrials, or part of a UFO development program, or the remains of ancient cities. But the leading theory is that these patterns serve a variety of purposes for the Chinese military, including calibrating satellite imaging systems and testing radar avoidance techniques. There have also been claims that these are "fractal antennas" to shield underground weapons facilities from ground-penetrating radar.

This particular crazy-quilt pattern was picked up on July 27 from an altitude of 423 miles by the IKONOS satellite, one of the spacecraft in a commercial Earth-imaging constellation operated by GeoEye. The picture is today's offering from the Cosmic Log Space Advent Calendar, which features views of Earth from space every day until Christmas...

In honor of this year's Golden Globe nominees, here's a picture of the landmark Hollywood sign in Los Angeles, as seen by the GeoEye-1 satellite from a height of 425 miles (684 kilometers).

The sign, which spells out the name of the cinema world's most famous locale in 45-foot-high (14-meter-high) letters, was originally created as an advertisement in 1923 and is now protected and promoted by the Hollywood Sign Trust.

Some folks used to say that China's Great Wall was the only human-made landmark visible from outer space, but even if that was ever true, the rise of high-resolution satellite imagery has made that claim as obsolete as the silent movies. Come to think of it, far more obsolete: After all, the film with the most Golden Globe nominations this year is a new-wave silent movie titled "The Artist."...

The blue-green water and white sediments combine to create a blossoming flower (or is that a leafy tree?), surrounded by the Arabian desert's swirling sand dunes. Qatar has placed the 9-mile-wide (15-kilometer-wide) tidal lake on the tentative list for consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site...

(The blue water and patterns of sediment in Khor al-Adaid, or Inland Sea, create a lovely effect when viewed from space by the GeoEye-1 satellite.)

This project is part of a larger program that began 18 months prior to the Rugby World Cup 2011 when the Council engaged a local beautification charitable trust to develop the HeART of the Nation program. The program created a series of 22, huge word installations on farmland close to Auckland's main airport. The idea came from a need to show off to the world the creative talents of South Auckland where a large Maori and Polynesian population exist. These mega-size welcome words were placed directly under Auckland's international and domestic flight paths to greet all 20 nations competing in the Rugby World Cup 2011 in their own language...

A satellite picture of Pearl Harbor, acquired by the GeoEye-1 satellite on Sept. 24, shows the USS Missouri docked at Battleship Row as a museum ship, with its bow pointing toward the USS Arizona memorial at lower right. The wreck of the Arizona can be seen below the white memorial, barely visible beneath the water's surface.

Seventy years after a "date which will live in infamy," this satellite image of Pearl Harbor shows the symbols of a war's beginning and end.

The symbol of the end is more evident: The USS Missouri sits at its dock at Ford Island in the Hawaiian harbor, serving as a museum ship. In 1945, the "Mighty Mo" was the stage for the formal Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. After almost a half-century of service, the battleship was decommissioned for good in 1992 and took its place on Pearl Harbor's Battleship Row in 1998...

PhotoSat has completed digital elevation mapping of Concordia's Providencia Ag-Cu deposit in northwestern Argentina using stereo satellite photos from GeoEye-1, the world's highest resolution commercial imaging satellite. The GeoEye-1 satellite is owned by GeoEye of Herndon, Virginia, one of the world's largest commercial high resolution satellite companies. The PhotoSat digital elevation map consists of an elevation point every metre and contours with 1m elevation intervals. Based on comparisons between the stereo satellite elevation mapping and thousands of ground survey points on similar projects, the accuracy of the stereo satellite elevation mapping is expected to be better than 50cm in elevation. The most popular links shared on Facebook during the first 11 months of 2011 range from "cute to thought provoking," Facebook wrote, and they "represent the type of news people have been sharing and discovering with friends in 2011."

The most popular link for readers was a series of satellite photographs published by the New York Times in the wake of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March. Searching for Genghis Khan from Space - GeoEye Imagery Collection Featured in Article

The GeoEye Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by GeoEye, Inc., announced that University of California San Diego (UCSD) research fellow and GeoEye Foundation grantee Albert Yu-Min Lin, Ph.D., is featured in a new National Geographic Channel broadcast, "Forbidden Tomb of Genghis Khan," which first aired onNov. 9, 2011. The documentary follows Dr. Lin on his journey and unveils recent archeological discoveries he made using GeoEye high-resolution satellite imagery and other methodologies.

In the spring of 2008, Dr. Lin initiated a research project using a newly formulated, noninvasive scientific approach to search for the tomb of legendary Mongolian leader Genghis Khan. The GeoEye Foundation awarded Dr. Lin's team a grant of high-resolution satellite imagery used to define the landscape and create accurate maps for the expedition. Using satellite data and noninvasive, ground-based imaging, the team could identify and study dozens of archeological sites, including ancient burial mounds...

Satellite images have revealed the ruins of a long-lost civilisation which existed in what is now the Sahara desert in Roman times and before. Archaeologists hope that the toppling of Libyan dictator Colonel Gadaffi, who has controlled access to the region in modern times, will permit the secrets of the lost cities beneath the sands to be unravelled properly at last...

The fall of Gaddafi has opened the way for archaeologists to explore the country's pre-Islamic heritage, so long ignored under his regime ... The Libyan antiquities department, badly under-resourced under Gaddafi, is closely involved in the project. Funding for the research has come from the European Research Council - who awarded Professor Mattingly an ERC Advanced Grant of nearly 2.5m euros - the Leverhulme Trust, the Society for Libyan Studies and the GeoEye Foundation.
