MapAction Utilized IKONOS for Disaster Response in Haiti - GeoEye Satellite Imagery Featured in Case Study

During August and September, 2008, a series of four tropical storms and hurricanes (Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike) caused a severe and protracted humanitarian disaster in Haiti, affecting more than 800,000 people. Tropical Storm Fay and Hurricane Gustav passed through the Caribbean in late August, 2008, both causing heavy rains over Haiti. With the ground saturated, rain bands from Hurricane Hanna then swirled over northern Haiti for four days, causing extensive flooding and mudslides. Badly hit was the northern city of Gonaives, which was flooded to a depth of about two metres with water and thick mud...Thankfully, GeoEye provided a one-meter high resolution IKONOS satellite image of the city and surroundings through a data grant from its Foundation. In addition, relief personnel in Gonaives were encouraged to collect and report GPS data, and MapAction organized this flow of data, producing detailed maps from the IKONOS data along with of the resources being deployed in Gonaives. These maps were then fed back to personnel on the ground and into situation reports deployed to the wider humanitarian community.

Since the launch of the GeoEye-1 satellite in 2008, Google has added gigabytes of high-resolution GeoEye-1 and IKONOS imagery to Google Earth and Google Maps, such as a historic scene from the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, views of the pyramids in Egypt, and images showing urban expansion in China. To highlight other broadly-interesting GeoEye-1 images, Google has a 'GeoEye Featured Imagery' layer in Google Earth. Included within this layer are Featured Imagery placemarks, including a thumbnail of the image, a link to view the image in full-resolution, and a wealth of information about the scene, including resolution, collection date, and a narrative about the location...

...You mentioned in your presentation that the graphical fidelity during low level flying is much better than in the original game. Is it still using the same satellite mapping? Yeah, it's all GeoEye Satellite Images mapping. Phenomenal high-resolution imagery textures and now we're able to populate the ground with so much more physical detail, too. So we can have missions and levels which take advantage of getting really low down to the ground. In one of the missions here you have the opportunity to take out response fighters before they even take off. You're given the warning that they're trying to track you down and seek you out. You're in a stealth fighter and they know you're out there but you can try to bomb them on the runway, even. So there are more levels of tactics. There are other missions where you are on the ground trying to escape from various places.

It has played a critical role in expedition planning and landscape mapping. Data from the newly launched GeoEye-1 satellite, at left, which boasts 0.41-meter resolution capabilities, was collected to enable more detailed ground survey through crowdsourcing.

Tracking Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreak Using High-Resolution GeoEye-1 Satellite Imagery

The Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) is an invasive species that is native to the western states and Canada, and is especially abundant in Colorado. They infest pine trees, particularly ponderosa, lodgepole, Scotch and limber, by tunneling under the bark in larger living trees, mating and laying eggs. The larvae spend the winter under the bark and transform into pupae in June and July. The MPB then produces bluestain fungi that aids in killing the tree...Figure 1. From time to time, people in charge of large internet-based projects request the help of the general public to assist in their work. Think SETI@home and Galaxy Zoo. Currently, there is another project with which you can help, supported by National Geographic Digital Media. It is called "Field Expedition: Mongolia — Valley of the Khans Project." This project is a huge archaeological survey of parts of Mongolia, looking for the tomb of Genghis Khan and other Mongolian cultural heritage sites. The Schultz fire, north of Flagstaff, Arizona had burned approx 14,800 acres and was 40% contained on June 22nd when GeoEye's IKONOS Satellite captured the image. This 1 meter resolution image was taken from 423 miles up in space.
