Salas y Gómez Expedition: The Sunken Cathedral - GeoEye is Elevating Insight on NATGEO Blog
Salas y Gómez has revealed some of its secrets, but also raised some questions. We conducted three dives today in quite difficult conditions. The swell was large and when we were doing our shallow work, it moved us up and down as though we were in a washing machine.
Our first dive was at a reef off the southeast corner of the island. We spotted this site because of the tremendous waves breaking on top of it. (You can actually see the break in the high-resolution satellite imagery of the island on Google Earth and GeoEye obtained for the expedition.)

5 Great User Created Maps Chronicling Egypt - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in Article
During the crisis in Egypt, third-party Geo developers helped the international community understand the situation and keep persons affected by the crisis safe through the use of innovative new tools. These same tools can be replicated by anyone in any crisis situation. In the developer examples below, three things jump out as particularly striking: How quickly these maps were built and put into action, some within hours of the first protests; how developers (many contributing independently) from all over the world worked together to get these maps up and running; and how geo-context has become extremely important for the international community in understanding and responding to any crisis, be it natural or man-made.

Krait Bay, Australia - GeoEye is Elevating Insight with High Resolution Imagery
Check out an Ocean Eddy off Krait Bay, Australia. Eddies form when a bend in the ocean current separates and makes a loop. In the Southern Hemisphere, cold water eddies rotate clockwise and warm water eddies rotate counterclockwise. The size of eddies and their rings vary as do their lifetimes—lasting between a month to over a year. Eddies are usually detected with ocean temperature and current instruments, but can also be detected by sight as in this image. GeoEye-1 .50-meter resolution collected 10 April 2009.

U.S. Sees N. Korea Provocations but not Missile Test - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in Article
(Reuters) - North Korea shows no signs it will test a missile soon, but succession politics in Pyongyang point to new provocative acts "in months and not years," the commander of U.S. military forces in the Pacific said on Thursday.

Act Locally in Sudan with New Imagery & Maps - GeoEye Information Services Featured on Google Blog
We are encouraging users to add their local knowledge to this mapping effort through a campaign to build a better map of Sudan. Recent satellite imagery is key to building up-to-date maps, and we are continuously acquiring fresh and historical imagery of Sudan. Our latest imagery update is now live on Google Map Maker, Google Earth, and Google Maps, with nearly fifty percent of the UN priority areas over Southern Sudan covered with high resolution imagery. Thanks to our satellite partner GeoEye, we will continue to acquire and publish high resolution imagery of the remaining UN priority areas, as well as to refresh areas that we have previously covered as the need arises. This new imagery, such as the one over Melut, will directly benefit the many organizations working in Sudan and ultimately support the building of a solid basemap of Sudan to achieve long-term socioeconomic objectives...

Counting the Crowds in Cairo - GeoEye is Elevating Insight
...That is because to ensure an accurate count, some computerized systems require multiple cameras, to get high-resolution images of many parts of the crowd, in case density varies. "I don't know of real technological solutions for this problem," said Nuno Vasconcelos, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of California, San Diego. "You will have to go with the 'photograph and ruler' gurus right now. Interestingly, this stuff seems to be mostly of interest to journalists. The funding agencies for example, don't seem to think that this problem is very important. For example, our project is more or less on stand-by right now, for lack of funding."
Without any such camera setup, many have turned to some of the companies that collect terrestrial images using satellites, but these companies have collected images mostly before and after the peak of protests this week. "GeoEye and its regional affiliate e-GEOS tasked its GeoEye-1 satellite on Jan. 29, 2011 to collect half-meter resolution imagery showing central Cairo, Egypt," GeoEye's senior vice president of marketing, Tony Frazier, said in a written statement. "We provided the imagery to several customers, including Google Earth. GeoEye normally relies on our partners to provide their expert analysis of our imagery, such as counting the number of people in these protests." This image was taken before the big midweek protests...
