Searching for Genghis Khan from Space - GeoEye Imagery Collection Featured in Article

The GeoEye Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by GeoEye, Inc., announced that University of California San Diego (UCSD) research fellow and GeoEye Foundation grantee Albert Yu-Min Lin, Ph.D., is featured in a new National Geographic Channel broadcast, "Forbidden Tomb of Genghis Khan," which first aired onNov. 9, 2011. The documentary follows Dr. Lin on his journey and unveils recent archeological discoveries he made using GeoEye high-resolution satellite imagery and other methodologies.

In the spring of 2008, Dr. Lin initiated a research project using a newly formulated, noninvasive scientific approach to search for the tomb of legendary Mongolian leader Genghis Khan. The GeoEye Foundation awarded Dr. Lin's team a grant of high-resolution satellite imagery used to define the landscape and create accurate maps for the expedition. Using satellite data and noninvasive, ground-based imaging, the team could identify and study dozens of archeological sites, including ancient burial mounds...

Some Question Reopening Hatteras to Visitors - GeoEye Imagery Collection Featured on CBS News

Raleigh, N.C. — For Dare County officials wrestling with the question of whether to reopen at least part of Irene-damaged Hatteras Island, the answer was obvious: the electricity was running and stores were stocked with supplies. And, most importantly, people needed the work that tourists would bring...

This file combination of two satellite images provided by GeoEye shows, above, an area of Hatteras Island, N.C., which includes a view of Highway 12 through the center of the frame, taken on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, after Hurricane Irene hit the Island on Aug. 27, and, below, the same area of Hatteras Island taken on June 12, 2011, before the island was cut off from the mainland after Hurricane Irene tore up several segments of Highway 12. Even some groups dependent on tourism are questioning Dare County?s decision to open part of Irene-damaged Hatteras Island to visitors less than three weeks after the hurricane struck, cutting off the only road access to the island. Both the Dare County Tourism Board and the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce say it was too early to open the four southernmost villages on Sept. 17 because so few tourists could get to the island via two ferries. Internet Mapping - GeoEye Imagery Collection Showcased

Access to geospatial data over the Internet has grown rapidly over the last five years. This has spawned a cottage industry of geospatial mash-ups targeted at niche markets. Geospatial mashup developers create applications from scratch that display various sources of geospatial data accessible over the internet. The developers aggregate the data and perform analysis and present the information in an easy-to-digest format targeted at specific end users. Typically these mashups leverage API's and are viewed in Google Earth, Microsoft Virtual Earth and Yahoo! Maps. These applications allow the end user to publish their data to various destinations, including local networks or web servers.

GeoEye imagery products provide highly accurate base maps that geospatial mashup developers can use to aggregate with other data and perform analysis on.

GeoEye Provides U.S. Government Online Access to Imagery - GeoEye Featured on Geospatial World

Herndon, US: GeoEye, Inc., announced that its EnhancedView Web Hosting Service (WHS) provides users with password protected, online access to unclassified, high-resolution imagery within hours of its collection. This service is now available for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA), US.

The EnhancedView WHS evolved from the NGA's Rapid Delivery of Online GEOINT (RDOG) system that began operations in April 2010. GeoEye built the EnhancedView WHS to support users across the National System for Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG). NSG members and partners have recently used the EnhancedView WHS to improve emergency response to natural disasters in Japan; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Joplin, Mo.; and along the Mississippi River.

The EnhancedView WHS combines GeoEye and third-party imagery to deliver highly precise base maps and allows users to access new imagery online within hours of collection. Users can access imagery through Esri's ArcGIS, Google Earth and other Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant tools and automatically receive notifications when new imagery is available for their area of interest.

The EnhancedView WHS is powered by GeoEye's online access platform, EyeQ. EyeQ enables thousands of concurrent users to easily access and download hundreds of terabytes of high-resolution imagery. Recent commercial applications have combined GeoEye-1 and IKONOS satellite imagery and MJ Harden aerial imagery with data from commercial radar providers and the USDA National Agriculture Imagery Program.

Google Earth, Street View As Historical Record in Japan - GeoEye Imagery Collection Featured in Article

A couple of months back we summed up the many ways that Google services were being used to help Japan after the March 11 earthquake. Today we learned about two more worthwhile projects in Japan, both involving Google's mapping technologies as historical record...

As you know, Japan is currently in the middle of rebuilding after on of the worst disasters to strike the country since 1945 bombing. New York Times reporter Hiroko Tabuchi just published a great piece explaining how Google is sending out it's Street View car to record digital images of areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Google Street View has been criticized in Japan in the past, primarily due to privacy concerns, but it appears that the company's efforts are welcomed in areas like Kesennuma.

Back in March The New York Times was quick to publish before-and-after satellite imagery (from GeoEye/EyeQ) of disaster-stricken areas. It's good to know that Google's Street View imagery will be available for news organizations and other interested parties to build upon in a similar manner as well...

GeoEye Featured Imagery in Google Earth - June 2011 Imagery Update

Since the launch of the GeoEye-1 satellite in 2008, Google has added gigabytes of high-resolution GeoEye-1 and IKONOS imagery to Google Earth and Google Maps, such as a historic scene from the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, views of the pyramids in Egypt, and images showing urban expansion in China. To highlight other broadly-interesting GeoEye-1 images, Google has a 'GeoEye Featured Imagery' layer in Google Earth. Included within this layer are Featured Imagery placemarks, including a thumbnail of the image, a link to view the image in full-resolution, and a wealth of information about the scene, including resolution, collection date, and a narrative about the location...

This month's featured images are:
Caracas, Venezuela
Kaliningrad
Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca
SFO - San Francisco International Airport, California
Tallahassee, Florida

Satellite Imagery Products - GeoEye Imagery Collection Showcased

Geo - The foundation of the GeoEye imagery product line, the Geo, is a radiometrically corrected map oriented image suitable for a wide range of uses. In addition to being suitable for visualization and monitoring applications, the Geo is shipped with the sensor camera model in rational polynomial coefficient (RPC) format. This camera model maps the respective ground coordinates to image product coordinates. Block adjustment, ortho-rectification, and other photogrammetric processing can be performed with the RPC camera model. This product, coupled with a digital elevation model (DEM), permits skilled users to make their own orthorectified products using standard commercial software and available data sets. Geo imagery products are available as panchromatic, multispectral, and pan-sharpened color imagery.
