Satellite Photos Take You Inside Gadhafi's Compound - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in WIRED Article

The world's been enthralled for the past week by the battle for Bab al-Azizia, Moammar Gadhafi's foreboding Tripoli compound.

But the full story of Bab al-Azizia requires a more panoramic view.

That's where satellite imagery company GeoEye comes in. Using a 0.5-meter resolution from its GeoEye-1 satellite, the company snapped these 15 stunning aerial pictures of Gadhafi's hideaway, showing the fortifications the Libyan dictator possessed before and after the rebels breached the doors of Tripoli. High Resolution Imagery - GeoEye Showcased

GeoEye-1's unsurpassed panchromatic image resolution of .41 meters (about 16 inches) means we can see an object the size of home plate on a baseball field. Once a panchromatic image is collected by GeoEye-1, it must be resampled to .50-meter resolution according to our current operating license with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) before it can be released commercially.

After a multispectral image is collected at 1.65-meter resolution by GeoEye-1, it may be sharpened using information from the panchromatic mode (pan-sharpened) so that the final image is full-color with .50-meter resolution. These are the clear, accurate images that online maps users most often associate with GeoEye...

Mapping Towards Crisis Relief in the Horn of Africa - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured on Google Lat Long Blog

In the wake of intense drought, the Horn of Africa is gripped by its worst famine in more than 60 years. Over 12.4 million people across Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia are threatened with hunger and disease as they are unable to access basic survival means. UN agencies and other humanitarian organizations are rallying to support refugees on the move, particularly to the thousands fleeing Somalia. Valerie Amos, OCHA Emergency Relief Coordinator, has stated that "This will not be a short crisis." The emergency is expected to persist at least three to four months, and the number of people needing humanitarian assistance could increase by as much as 25 percent.

Fresh and accurate maps are among the many critical factors in assessing such a state of crisis, as they provide vital information to facilitate emergency response and planning. Thanks to the efforts of our satellite imagery partner, GeoEye, we now have high resolution imagery of locations with the most pressing humanitarian needs. This has made Google Map Maker community mapping efforts even more effective, by allowing the creation of improved maps over refugee camps in Kenya, Ethiopia and the city of Mogadishu. Volunteers are mapping roads, hospitals, schools, community centers, and water resources, among other vital landmarks. The map data contributed is being shared periodically with the UN agencies engaged in this crisis. Google has also donated 1 million USD to help local and international organizations provide famine and drought relief support in the Horn of Africa...

GeoEye Featured Imagery in Google Earth - August 2011 Imagery Update

Since the launch of the GeoEye-1 satellite in 2008, Google has added gigabytes of high-resolution GeoEye-1 and IKONOS imagery to Google Earth and Google Maps, such as a historic scene from the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, views of the pyramids in Egypt, and images showing urban expansion in China. To highlight other broadly-interesting GeoEye-1 images, Google has a 'GeoEye Featured Imagery' layer in Google Earth. Included within this layer are Featured Imagery placemarks, including a thumbnail of the image, a link to view the image in full-resolution, and a wealth of information about the scene, including resolution, collection date, and a narrative about the location...

This month's featured images are:
St. Augustine, Florida
Cerro de la Olla, Taos, New Mexico
Sochi, Russia

Alaska officials have raised the alert level of a volcano after a growing lava dome appeared in its summit crater.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory said the observation increases the possibility but does not guarantee an eruption at Cleveland Volcano.

The officials said the dome has grown from about 131 feet to 164 feet in diameter since Friday.
