Devastating images of the twister's destruction have already spread across the Internet, as has a horrifying video shot from inside the heart of the storm. Now, an aerial photo from GeoEye reveals the massive extent of ruination left behind from the tornado.


This one-foot resolution, digital aerial image of Joplin, Missouri, was collected May 24, 2011 at approximately 9:30 a.m. The image shows the remains of Joplin High School, located at 21st and Indiana, just two days after a Level 5 tornado touched down on May 22, 2011 and destroyed most of the town.

...This half-meter resolution satellite image shows the Space Shuttle Endeavour on Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Florida, awaiting launch to the International Space Station. According to news reports, as of May 4, 2011, Endeavour will launch no sooner than May 16, 2011, which would be the 36th shuttle mission to the station and the 134th and final flight of Endeavour. GeoEye tasked its GeoEye-1 Satellite on May 1, 2011 to collect this image of Cape Canaveral at 10:53 a.m. local time, while flying 423 miles above the Earth at an average speed of 17,000 mph.


The Endeavour was launched on April 12, 1981 and was named after the first ship commanded by 18th century British explorer James Cook. On its maiden voyage in 1768, Cook sailed into the South Pacific and around Tahiti to observe the passage of Venus between the Earth and the Sun. During another leg of the journey, Cook discovered New Zealand, surveyed Australia and navigated the Great Barrier Reef.

High-Resolution Imagery Featured in Google Earth - GeoEye 101 Showcased

GeoEye Featured Imagery in Google Earth. Since the launch of the GeoEye-1 satellite in 2008, Google has added gigabytes of high-resolution GeoEye-1 and IKONOS imagery to Google Earth and Google Maps, such as a historic scene from the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, views of the pyramids in Egypt, and images showing urban expansion in China.


To highlight other broadly-interesting GeoEye-1 images, Google has a 'GeoEye Featured Imagery' layer in Google Earth. Included within this layer are Featured Imagery placemarks, including a thumbnail of the image, a link to view the image in full-resolution, and a wealth of information about the scene, including resolution, collection date, and a narrative about the location...

High-Resolution Imagery - GeoEye 101 Showcased

GeoEye-1's unsurpassed panchromatic image resolution of .41 meters (about 16 inches) means we can see an object the size of home plate on a baseball field. Once a panchromatic image is collected by GeoEye-1, it must be resampled to .50-meter resolution according to our current operating license with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) before it can be released commercially.


After a multispectral image is collected at 1.65-meter resolution by GeoEye-1, it may be sharpened using information from the panchromatic mode (pan-sharpened) so that the final image is full-color with .50-meter resolution. These are the clear, accurate images that online maps users most often associate with GeoEye...

High-Res Mississippi River Flood Imagery - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in Blog Post

Satellite company GeoEye has released two new high-resolution images of the recent flooding along the Mississippi River.


The first image shows flooding at the junction of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, around Cairo, Illinois on May 8. Move the slider to compare with 2009 aerial imagery from the USDA Farm Service Agency / Google Earth.


On May 10 at 12:10 p.m. local time, the IKONOS satellite took this photo of General DeWitt Spain Airport (5 miles northwest of Memphis). As you can see, the entire airport is submerged. The earlier image, also from GeoEye, was taken in 2006.

Japan Agrees on Compensation Plan for Plant Operator - GeoEye is Elevating Insight

Tokyo — Japan's government decided Friday to set up a fund to help pay damages stemming from the crisis at a tsunami-crippled nuclear plant, financed by public money and mandatory contributions from utility companies.


Tokyo Electric Power Co. expects a deluge of damage claims from those affected by the radiation-leaking Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant on the northeastern coast, whose problems constitute the worst nuclear accident since Chornobyl in 1986. However, the utility is not expected to be able to pay all of them...

Satellite Photos Show Navy SEAL Helicopter Used in Osama bin Laden Raid - GeoEye is Elevating Insight

New satellite photos of Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan, where he was killed May 1 in a military raid, offer a revealing glimpse of the operation's aftermath, including roadblocks leading to the complex and the disabled helicopter thought to be part of a top secret U.S. defense project.


The images, released by the commercial satellite and aerial imagery provider GeoEye, zero in on the bin Laden compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The photos show no apparent structural damage to the buildings, but the remains of one U.S. Navy SEAL transport helicopter can be seen...

Pictures of the Day: 6 May 2011 - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in The Telegraph Picture Gallery

The Space Shuttle Endeavour stands ready on Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre, Florida, awaiting launch to the International Space Station. Endeavour will launch no sooner than 10 May 2011. This mission will be the 36th shuttle mission to the station and the 134th and final flight of Endeavour. GeoEye tasked its GeoEye-1 satellite to collect this image of Cape Canaveral on 1 May 2011, while flying 423 miles above the Earth at an average speed of 17,000 mph.

Interactive: Into Pakistan, Under the Cover of Darkness - GeoEye Information Services Featured in Article

Based on intelligence first presented to President Obama last August, the United States launched a raid in the early morning hours of Monday in Pakistan on a fortified compound suspected to house Osama bin Laden, the world's most wanted terrorist.


Satellite photos had pinpointed a house and one-acre compound built in 2005. The high walls, barbed wire and pervasive security cameras suggested it was designed as a private fortress.
