Completed in 1965, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, was built to revive a riverfront economy and to serve as a tribute to the westward expansion of the United States. Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River and standing at 630 feet, it is the tallest manmade monument in the United States, which required 900 tons of stainless steel to complete.
