Stephen Kinzer: We Couldn’t Have Said It Better Ourselves - GeoEye Satellite Imagery Featured in Article

I spoke with Mr. Brender who received that historic call, and he was eager to read some of the emails he received from grateful Iranians: "Dear sirs, I want to say thank you, thank you..." signed a Persian member of the Green Movement. The Green Movement member was thankful that the satellite image showed the area inside Azadi Square as mostly empty, whereas the streets leading to the square were packed with crowds the regime did not trust enough to let inside. That is, potential opposition supporters...

Keeping an eye on repression - GeoEye Satellite Images Featured in Article

In the days prior to the Bahman 22 anniversary of the Iranian revolution, Khamenei’s forces were making furious efforts to tighten a blindfold on the media so that the world could not see the magnitude of the Iranian opposition. At the same time the opposition movement, with far fewer resources, had to find a way to get the truth out with as little bloodshed as possible.

It was during this time that Mark Brender, the Vice President of Communications at GeoEye (www.geoeye.com), an operator of high-resolution Earth imaging satellites, received a call from an unusual customer. A professor at one of Iran’s universities was wondering if a GeoEye satellite would be in position on 11 February, 2010 to take a picture of Azadi Square at the time when Ahamadinejad was giving his 22 Bahman speech...

The Big Picture: Thousands rally in Tehran - BBC Article Features GeoEye Satellite Imagery

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians rally in Tehran to mark the 31st anniversary of Iran's revolution. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad used the rally to attack the West, and said Iran had produced its first stock of 20% enriched uranium. This image was taken by GeoEye's IKONOS satellite from 423 miles in space on 11 February 2010, as it moved from north to south over Iran at a speed of four miles per second. The image shows masses of people gathered along Azadi Road; a major boulevard that runs east-west through central Tehran. It also shows many white-roofed buses parked along the demonstration route.

A view into Tehran (10:47 a.m. on 22 Bahman) - GeoEye Satellite Imagery

Today marks the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, and with it a new round of demonstrations has presumably arisen. With tight controls of media and Internet access, it's very hard for those outside of Iran to get a clear picture of what's going on on the streets of Tehran and around the country. Thanks to our partners at GeoEye, we're able to share with you one independent view: from 423 miles in space, via the IKONOS satellite. The road in the heart of the image is Azadi Road in the heart of Tehran. It was taken at 10:47 AM local time on February 11, and shows huge throngs in the streets.

Helping Haiti: Byte By Byte - Article Features GeoEye Satellite Images

As much as I love design and interactive media, reading the newspaper every day is a sobering reminder of the fact that this is generally not a life-saving profession. It is greatly inspiring, then, to see how new media has been put to incredible use in helping the ailing Haiti. Here are some fascinating examples...Google collaborated with satellite imagery company GeoEye to make images of the destruction available in Google Earth and Google Maps. The goal is to create a helpful tool for aid organizations.

IT Infrastructure: Google Leans on GeoEye-1 Satellite for Celestial Views

When the earthquake devastated Haiti Jan. 12, Google sprang into action, launching satellite imagery from Google Earth and Google Maps to help the world see how the quake leveled the island. To do this, Google relied on high-resolution imagery from the GeoEye-1 satellite. Google and satellite maker GeoEye have enjoyed a fruitful partnership, with Google using GeoEye-1 imagery for the 2009 presidential inauguration, views of the pyramids in Egypt and images showing urban expansion in China. On Jan. 25, Google added a new "GeoEye Featured Imagery" layer in Google Earth. Learn more about the Google-GeoEye relationship in this eWEEK slide show.
