Clooney's 'Antigenocide Paparazzi': Watching Sudan - GeoEye High Resolution Imagery Featured in TIME Article

Clooney, the actor, and Prendergast, a human-rights activist with 25 years of experience in Africa, had heard enough on their seven-day visit to know that a new round of atrocities could follow the January referendum on independence. If it did, the likelihood was that no one would be held accountable. Why not, Clooney asked, "work out some sort of a deal to spin a satellite" above southern Sudan and let the world watch to see what happens?...You don't have to be a spook to have an eye in the sky anymore. Private firms with names like GeoEye, DigitalGlobe and ImageSat International have a half-dozen "birds" circling the globe every 90 minutes in low-Earth orbit, about 297 miles (478 km) up. The best images from these satellites display about 8 sq. in. (50 sq. cm) of the ground in each pixel on a computer screen. That is not enough granularity to read a car's license plate or ID a person, but analysts can tell the difference between cars and trucks and track the movements of troops or horses. "It is Google Earth on lots of steroids," says Lars Bromley, a top U.N. imagery analyst...

Discovery is due to set off on its 39th and final mission no earlier than Dec. 17 -– which means it would still be in orbit on Christmas Day.

The image he is referring to in the video was collected on Oct. 30 to capture the crowd of people who gathered for the "Rally to Restore Sanity" held from noon to 3 p.m. on the same day. The image was collected by the GeoEye-1 satellite from 423 miles in space as it moved from north to south over the Eastern seaboard at a speed of four miles per second.

RICHMOND- Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that GeoEye, Inc., a premier provider of superior satellite and aerial geospatial information and services, will invest $10 million to move its corporate headquarters to the Dulles Corner Office Center in Fairfax County. The company will create 100 new jobs over the next three years and relocate its 230 Virginia-based employees to the expanded corporate headquarters facility in the first few months of 2011. Virginia successfully competed against Colorado and Maryland for the project. Speaking about today's announcement, Governor McDonnell remarked, "GeoEye joins other major companies who have recently decided to make Virginia home to their corporate headquarters. GeoEye is a high-technology company that provides vital satellite imagery and geospatial intelligence products used by a wide range of government, public safety, and commercial clients for applications in mapping, intelligence, agriculture, forestry management, oil and gas, mining, infrastructure and many other industries.
