A new space race: Bing vs. Google

In 2008, Google got its logo on the rocket launching the GeoEye-1 satellite for collecting space-based imagery. This year, it's Microsoft's turn...In the last year, though, Google slurped up a lot of GeoEye-1 imagery--about 500,000 square kilometers, according to Google spokeswoman Elaine Filadelfo. No plume, but a firehose of data from NASA moon bombing

Early this morning, NASA's LCROSS mission sent hardware crashing into a crater on the Moon's south pole in the hope that the debris plume would carry signs of water....The observatories that were able to image the event ranged from Arizona and New Mexico (Apache Point, Magdalena Ridge, and the Vatican Observatory), through California's Mount Wilson and Palomar sites, and included a lot of the best hardware in Hawaii, such as the Keck, Gemini, and Subaru telescopes. Watching from space were the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which was launched with LCROSS, and the newly refurbished Hubble Space Telescope. A few private satellites that normally do Earth imaging, IKONOS and GeoEye-1, were also redirected to the Moon for the event.

GeoEye High Resolution Imagery featured on WebEcoist

Some photographers travel for the specific reason to photograph a great event or to capture for the world a historical moment of time. Such was the case at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The dark swarms on the ground that resemble ants are huge crowds of people who traveled to take their own photos and be present in Washington D.C. to see the new president sworn into office. This image was shot by GeoEye Satellite down at the National Mall and the United States Capitol on 1/20/09. In the bottom photo, another historic moment was recorded. A Marine helicopter carrying former President George W. Bush departed from the East Front of the U.S. Capitol as President Barack Obama, first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife wave goodbye.

Cloudy with a Chance of Geospatial at Location Intelligence

This week I’ve had the privilege of attending the Location Intelligence conference in Denver....As evidence for this, Paul Bissett of WeoGeo showed information from Spiceworks that 56% of small and medium businesses are already using cloud services, primarily in the areas of web hosting, email and online data backup. GeoEye was cited in several talks as already today using cloud services to provide solutions to both the data processing and data distribution challenges of the mindboggling raster data volumes that their sensors are gathering.

...Those eyes not only include LCROSS, but also instruments on LRO, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the Earth Observing 1 technology demonstration satellite. Sweden's Odin radio astronomy satellite and the commercial GeoEye spacecraft, primarily used for Earth imagery, will also turn toward the moon for supplemental observations.
