GeoEye - This image features Burning Man, an annual event held in the Black Rock Desert on a dry lakebed, or playa, in northern Nevada. In 2010, over 51,000 people congregated at this location. 2011 attendance was capped at 50,000 participants and the event sold out on July 24. In the Google Earth base imagery, the satellite image of the Burning Man Festival from 2009 is clearly visible. Noteworthy about the event is one of ten Burning Man governing principles: "Leave No Trace." At the end of each Burning Man Festival, the playa is returned to its pristine condition by all that attend. Turn on the GeoEye-1 image and one instantly sees the 2011 Black Rock City spring to life once again, just in a new decade. This year's theme: Rites of Passage.
