Lake Niassa, also called Lake Malawi or Lake Nyassa, contains upwards of 1,000 species of fish, making it the richest body of freshwater on the planet. Ninety-nine percent of the species are unique to this lake, including usipa, lake salmon, tilapia and aquarium cichlids. Lake wildlife is a vital source of livelihood and a protein-rich food source for the lakeshore fishermen.
